Gmeiner Art & Cultural Center
Wellsboro, PA
A free community art center in the heart of Tioga County
Our Mission: The Gmeiner Art & Cultural Center is a non‑profit dedicated to enriching the Wellsboro community by cultivating the links between art, culture, and community.
Gifted to Wellsboro by Arthur J. Gmeiner in memory of his family, the Center is the only free art gallery in Tioga County, offering rotating exhibits, classes, and cultural events in a distinctive mid‑century modern building just steps from Wellsboro’s gas‑lit Main Street.
From a quiet afternoon wandering the galleries to a packed opening reception, a children’s workshop, or a quilting charity sew‑in, the Gmeiner Art & Cultural Center makes it clear that in Wellsboro, art is not just something you look at—it’s something the whole community lives with and makes together.
Flagship programs:
Two galleries, constantly changing art: the Gmeiner features a Main Gallery and an Atrium Gallery, with exhibits that typically change every month. Learn more here
A studio built for making and meeting: behind the galleries is a dedicated Studio, “literally made for that purpose,” where artists teach and community groups gather. Learn more here
Classes, workshops, and cultural events: hosts a variety of classes and workshops—from painting and poured‑acrylic sessions to rock art for children, floral Ikebana workshops, and visiting‑artist classes. Learn more here
Community impact:
Architecturally, the Gmeiner stands out: a mid‑century modern structure preserved amid Wellsboro’s 19th‑century streetscape, now recognized as a Route 6 Artisan Trail stop and a unique cultural landmark.
Programmatically, the Center:
Provides continuous, free access to high‑quality local and regional art.
Gives youth, emerging artists, and established creators a professional space to exhibit side by side.
Serves as a meeting place for quiltmakers, photographers, musicians, and art clubs that animate Wellsboro’s creative life year‑round.
